What’s the Use?

Chariots of Fire

Don’t you envy those people who seem to know exactly what their purpose is? They  march through life with laser focus, knowing who they are, why they’re here, and what to do about it. It’s a bit annoying at times, especially when we’re floundering in our own decision-making, when we can’t figure out which fork to take in the road.

A quote that has come repeatedly to mind in the past week is from Chariots of Fire, the story of Olympic runner Eric Liddell. He said, “I believe God made me for a purpose, but he also made me fast. And when I run I feel his pleasure.”

LOVE that! And it’s made me wonder – what if his purpose WAS to run fast? Why should there be a distinction? (You’ll need to watch the movie to see it in context.) What if our purpose is to be who God made us to be – ever-evolving, growing, learning beings doing that thing we love doing? Maybe it’s running fast. Or cleaning office buildings. Or raising children. Baking cookies. Serving as room mother for our child’s classroom.

What if our purpose is as unique as our fingerprints? Perhaps our purposeFingerprints.png isn’t to find a way to stop Alzheimer’s (although that would be amazing!) or develop a drug to cure cancer. Perhaps it’s as simple as caring for our neighbors, teaching children to read, using our gifts to paint/sculpt/ build for the enjoyment of others.

Living out that purpose will, I’m sure, make the world (from our block to our community to the world) a better place. And even better than that? It will give God pleasure.

So today – live your purpose. Be a beacon of hope to those around you. Make someone smile. Share a laugh. Do simple things that will bring someone joy. Give money to the homeless guy on the corner – along with a smile. That’s where you’ll find your purpose.

I’d love to hear your story. What’s your purpose?
